  • Image capture. Example of a barley plant imaged from two different angles of the side and the top.
  • Evaluation of plant health. Due to the colour information of the RGB image, necrotic and healthy leaves can be identified and quantified.
  • Image analysis.Digital image analysis is used to identify the plant in the image and to quantify its area, height, width etc.
  • Growth measurements. Since 3D imaging is non-destructive the same plants can be monitored over time for growth analysis.
  • Use of phenomics to study salt stress responses: Prolonged exposure to high external salt concentrations leads to an accumulation of Na+ in the shoot. Toxic levels of Na + result in an earlier onset of leaf senescence that can be quantified using the colour information of the RGB images (Rajendran et al., 2009).
  • Use of phenomics to study salt stress responses: Application of salt stress leads to an immediate reduction in growth rate, which can be monitored by regular imaging. Lines with high osmotic tolerance are good at maintaining a high relative growth rate (left), whereas the growth rate of osmotically sensitive plants is greatly reduced (right, Rajendran et al., 2009).
